Yes, Our Ant Farms Are More Expensive | Here Is Why
Let's be honest from the very first line: our ant farms are more expensive than the kits you'll find on Amazon, Temu or AliExpress. We won't hide behind fancy words, and we won't pretend otherwise. What you pay for at Best Ants UK is very simple: your colony's life, and your happiness watching it grow.
When you buy from us, you pay for three things: knowledge built into every handmade nest since 1997, a living colony raised from a single queen with months of care, and real human support for the whole life of your colony. Here is each one, told straight.
And that support never sleeps. Our AI assistant Anthony lives on our website 24/7, 365 days a year, for UK customers only, because the UK is the only place we sell to. Ask him a question at 2 pm or 2 am and he answers straight away, drawing on our own care guides and product knowledge, and when a question needs a human, our team picks it up personally.

Knowledge Inside Every Handmade Nest | Built Since 1997
We have kept ants since 1997, built more than 300 prototypes, and made moulds and casts of real abandoned wild nests to map exactly how ants build underground. You can read the full story in Our History.
That research taught us things no factory kit ever considers: how airflow must differ for every part of the nest, why the queen's chamber needs 7 to 11% higher humidity than the rest, and why chambers sit at different levels, each with its own temperature. Every nest we make copies what ants build for themselves in nature.
Our own substrate is a blend of seven different substrates, bonded firmly with a nano gel glue that is completely harmless to the insects, so it never collapses and buries a colony. And where most farms stop at a red filter, we add a black cover on top, giving the queen the complete darkness she has in nature.
A calm queen in that dark, sheltered nesting area settles faster and lays sooner, and in our experience colonies in our farms grow noticeably faster than in an ordinary kit. Kits such as 👉 Lucas and 👉 Angie also come with a pre-installed humidity and temperature meter, so you can check conditions at a glance and spot the two biggest beginner mistakes, too dry and too hot, before they take hold.

Every Colony Is Raised from a Single Queen
The ants are not stock from a warehouse shelf. Every colony starts as one single queen and is raised with daily care, the right food and warmth, often for close to a year before a harvester colony is ready for its new keeper.
You are buying living animals that someone has looked after every single day. That time, money and effort is in the price, and we would rather tell you that straight than hide it behind a shiny box.
Your Happiness, and Your Ants', Is Part of the Price

We have invested heavily in after-sales care, because this is exactly where cheap kits leave you on your own. Children message us all the time, and we always answer, often within hours, evenings and holidays included.
Generic AI chatbots regularly tell worried new keepers their ants are “probably dead”, when the colony is simply tucked away settling in. One short reply from a team that has kept ants since 1997 saves the colony, and the disappointment in a child's eyes as it struggles and vanishes never happens.
The same experience lives inside our AI ant-keeping assistant, Anthony, and we are proud of him. He draws on our care guides, our product knowledge and everything we have learned since 1997 from examining, watching, raising, caring for, feeding and brooding ants. Of the roughly 16,000 ant species known on Earth, we have kept more than 150 of the most famous and desired species among keepers worldwide, from the harmless, laid-back Lasius niger to the furious bullet ants.
For our own research we even raised a massive army ant colony, following the queen's whole life, a true miracle to watch. All of that knowledge now answers your questions day and night, and all of that support, for the life of your colony, is included in the price of every 👉 ant farm kit with ants.
Here they are, happy as can be: 1,300 Camponotus nicobarensis, one queen, six years with us, a month into their new large handmade nest.
Don't Take Our Word for It
Our customers say it better than we ever could. On Trustpilot we are rated Excellent, 4.8 out of 5: “The support I received before and after purchasing our first ant colony has been amazing” (Salina), “really quick and straight forward advice” (Frankie), and “the Queens I have got from here are all still alive and thriving” (Kenny).
We used to host reviews on our own website, but the widget slowed the site down, so two years ago we moved them to independent platforms. Read every word for yourself on our Trustpilot page and our Google reviews, and judge us by what real keepers say.
What a Cheap Ant Farm Actually Buys You
Gel farms such as Uncle Milton and AntWorks are built for observing a handful of worker ants for a week or two: the gel is food and home at once, and customers tell us it turns mouldy within days. The unbranded acrylic boxes from Temu and AliExpress sold all over Amazon are a different problem: no humidity system, no darkness for a queen and no real escape-proofing. Neither gives a queen what she needs to found a colony, and keepers who started there write to us about it every week.
Cheap is only cheap until the colony is gone. Before you buy any kit, read our guide on 👉 everything you need to know before making a purchase.
Ethically Sourced Live Ants
We sell UK-native species and captive-bred colonies only, and we never source ants from Africa or take part in wild ant mining. Our founder has been quoted by the BBC, The Guardian, The Times and Dialogue Earth for expert insight into ethical ant keeping. Every article is on our Best Ants UK in the press page.
FAQ
Why are Best Ants UK ant farms more expensive than Amazon ant farms?
Because you pay for more than a box: nest research running since 1997, a colony raised from a single queen over many months, and real human support for the life of your colony. The craftsmanship, the months of rearing and the lifetime support are all in the price, and we say that openly.
Why do colonies grow faster in your ant farms?
The black cover over the red filter gives the queen a dark, sheltered nesting area, just as she would have underground. A calm queen settles and lays sooner, and in our experience over nearly three decades, that is what drives faster colony growth.
Which kit is best for a complete beginner?
Lucas for black garden ants or Angie for harvester ants, both with a pre-installed meter and a live queen. For something larger, the 👉 A7 Plus is our most advanced beginner setup.
Are your live ants ethically sourced?
Yes. UK-native species and captive-bred colonies only, with no imports from Africa, as covered by the BBC, The Guardian, The Times and Dialogue Earth.
