Our History: How We Created the Perfect Ant Farm for Live Ants with a Queen

Takeaways
Best Ants UK was founded in 1997 — that’s 29 years of real ant-keeping passion as of 2026.
Over 300 prototypes and 30+ years of global observation have led to hybrid nests designed specifically for queens and thriving long-term colonies.
Our farms feature precise airflow (sweet spot: 17%), non-toxic nano-resin substrate, and safe humidity control — solving the deadly problems of cheap farms.
The hobby is surprisingly affordable: an initial investment of around £100, then just £10 a month to maintain.
We’ve helped hundreds of children (especially those with ASD and ADHD) improve focus, patience, and confidence through ant-keeping.
We guarantee live arrival and only sell ethically sourced, captive-bred ants.
The Spark (1997–2003)

It all began in 1997 when our founder Pat and a couple of ant fellows started keeping common UK species: Lasius niger (Black Garden Ants) and Lasius flavus (Yellow Meadow Ants). By 2003, the range expanded to Myrmica rubra (European Fire Ants) and Messor barbarus (Harvester Ants). Early colonies quickly revealed a harsh truth: most commercial ant farms were built for short-term worker observation only. Queens died within weeks in cheap plastic, gel, or concrete setups. The market lacked farms designed for the queen — the heart of any colony. We decided to change that forever. It took more than 10 years to make our first custom ant farm for a client in Belgium.
The Vision: A Home Where Queens Thrive for Decades

The goal was ambitious but clear: create the perfect ant farm where a queen could live 20–30 years, raise healthy brood, and grow a strong colony — safely, visibly, and accessibly for beginners. We studied wild ant nests across Europe and beyond, mapping behaviour, humidity gradients, temperature preferences, airflow needs, and natural chamber layouts.
The result?
A completely new approach to nest design that puts the queen first.
29 Years of Prototyping and Testing

Over nearly three decades (1997–2026), we built and tested more than 300 prototypes. Every detail was refined:
A dedicated, perfectly sized chamber for the queen kept 7–11% higher humidity, along with the perfect air flow to ensure her majesty's happiness.
3–5 separate brood chambers with tailored humidity levels for eggs, larvae, and pupae.
Food storage zones to mimic natural granaries for harvesters.
Airflow tuned precisely to 15–21% (sweet spot 17% in the queen chamber) — anything outside this range harms brood.
We discovered that cheap Chinese ant farms' concrete/Ytong farms release toxic gases when moistened (unavoidable for humidity needs), and gel farms collapse or mould quickly. Our solution: a special non-toxic nano resin + substrate mixture that maintains perfect humidity while killing microbes and mites at the same time. We did it!
What Sets Our Ant Farms Apart

Every Best Ants UK nest is engineered for queens and full colonies:
Hybrid design with proper ventilation and escape-proof construction.
Red acrylic filter + black cover for complete darkness in the queen chamber (critical for egg-laying).
Pre-installed temperature and humidity meters in premium kits (e.g., A7 Plus, Maisie, Angie, A4-2 Smart Meter) — no other beginner brand offered this.
Safe, durable materials — no toxic off-gassing, no collapsing substrates.
Our oldest colony — an 18-year-old Messor barbarus queen — is still thriving today without hibernation, proving the design works in several ant farms.
The Benefits for Keepers Today
Our ant farms are now loved in hundreds of UK homes and schools. They teach responsibility, biology, ecology, and teamwork while being low-maintenance and calming — especially helpful for children with ASD or ADHD. The hobby dramatically enhances focus and patience, particularly for neurodivergent children. Many parents tell us their child with autism, or ADHD, becomes completely absorbed for hours watching the ants work, building confidence and reducing anxiety.
The hobby is also incredibly affordable: most people start with an initial investment of around £70 to £150 for a complete kit, then spend just £5 to £10 a month on food and basic supplies. That’s less than a cup of coffee a week for years of fascination and learning.
Why We Only Recommend UK-Native Species

We strongly advise beginners to stick with native UK ants. Exotic ant species like venator, bullet ants, trap-jaw ants, leafcutter ants, or other non-native tropical species are dangerous and extremely difficult to keep happy in the UK.
Leafcutter ants, for example, need almost impossible-to-maintain 95–99% humidity and fungus gardens that fail quickly here. Bullet ants and trap-jaw ants are aggressive and require specialist conditions that most homes can’t provide safely. Non-native ants often struggle with our climate, leading to stress, colony failure, or escape risks.
That’s why we only recommend two beginner-friendly native species:
Lasius niger (Black Garden Ants) — gentle, no sting, very active, and forgiving.
Messor barbarus (Harvester Ants) — fascinating seed-collecting behaviour, educational, and rewarding to watch.

Q&A
Q: How long have you been developing ant farms?
A: Since 1997 — that’s 29 years of real ant-keeping and more than 300 prototypes as of 2026.
Q: Why do queens die in cheap farms?
A: Most lack proper humidity, airflow (sweet spot 17%), darkness, and safe materials. Cheap concrete/Ytong releases toxic gases when moistened; gel farms mould in a week. Our nano-resin-substrate and precise design solve these issues.
Q: Do queens need hibernation?
A: Not always — many species do well with just a cooler period. Our kits support both hibernating and non-hibernating colonies.
Q: Are your ants captive-bred?
A: Yes — we raise most colonies ourselves and guarantee live arrival.
Q: Where should I start with a queen colony?
A: Our Angie Starter Kit or Black Ants Beginner Kit is ideal for the first steps for live queens and safe long-term keeping.
Q: How can I learn more?
