Advanced | Challenging Ant Species for Experienced Keepers
What Advanced means
Advanced species are for keepers who are confident with colony care. Each one brings its own challenge: a special diet, very fast growth, an unusual lifestyle or exact conditions that leave little room for error.
Who it suits
Experienced keepers who have successfully raised more than one colony.
What to expect
Some need live prey, such as the trap-jaw ants.
Some need large starting colonies; the Carebara marauder ants need 100 or more workers.
Some have complex natural lives, like the slave-making Formica sanguinea.
Some are fast and very active, so escape prevention matters.
Warmth and humidity often need to be kept within a narrow range.
Before you buy
Read the full care sheet and make sure your setup is ready before the colony arrives.
Our favourite advanced species
Pheidole noda (Asian Big-Headed Ant): soldiers that crack seeds. It needs steady warmth and strict escape prevention, and it is best kept in the A7 Plus.
Carebara diversa (Asian Marauder Ant): tiny minors, medium workers and huge majors in one colony, with a queen that can lay hundreds of eggs a day.
Anoplolepis gracilipes (Yellow Crazy Ant): bright yellow, lightning-fast and always busy, with colonies that can grow at an impressive speed.
Recommended setups
A7 Plus Ant Farm: the same nest as our Lucas kit, with a hydration system, meter and foraging arena.
My Living Ants Nest Natural Eco Ant Farm Large: a large natural setup with layered substrates, with a temperature and humidity meter as an option.
Every Best Ants UK care sheet is free and written by our team, keeping ants since 1997.
