Expert | Specialist Ant Species for Expert Keepers Only
What Expert means
Expert species are the most demanding ants in the hobby. They need specialist setups, steady tropical conditions and real experience. Some have powerful, painful stings, and some depend on a living fungus garden to survive.
Who it suits
Specialist keepers only. These are not suitable for children or beginners.
What to expect
Leafcutter ants farm a fungus garden. They are kept as established colonies only and need fresh leaves every day.
Bull ants, bullet ants and fire ants can deliver very painful stings, so they need secure setups and careful handling.
Weaver ants live in trees, so they need a tall, planted, humid setup.
Stable heat and high humidity are needed all year round.
Before you buy
Expert colonies are a long-term commitment. Read the care sheet in full, and ask us before ordering if anything is unclear.
Our favourite expert species
Harpegnathos venator (Indian Jumping Ant): the ant on our logo. It is a primitive jumping hunter with huge eyes that leaps onto live prey.
Oecophylla smaragdina (Green Asian Weaver Ant): workers stitch leaves into nests using silk from their own larvae.
Atta mexicana (Mexican Leafcutter Ant): a complex society, from tiny minors to big majors, all serving the fungus garden that feeds the colony.
Recommended setups
My Living Ants Nest Natural Eco Ant Farm: the medium size, the right space for a new colony of a queen and about 10 workers.
RoxAnt Wooden Ant Farm: plaster of Paris filling holds moisture far longer than substrate, and it has a Bluetooth temperature and humidity meter. Every expert species on this page will thrive in it.
Every Best Ants UK care sheet is free and written by our team, keeping ants since 1997.
