The claim that costs beginners their queens

Every summer we get the same message. Someone has read online that Lasius flavus are polygynous, collected a handful of queens after a nuptial flight, put them all in one test tube, and now wants to know why the queens are disappearing one by one.

This year we had a keeper with twenty queens in a single nest. Twenty. All doomed, and all because a few websites repeat a half-truth without ever explaining the conditions it depends on.

So we ran the experiment properly. This article covers what the science says, what we observed with 250 queens over 30 days, and the one distinction that almost nobody online makes.

Search "Lasius flavus polygynous", and you will find the same sentence recycled across care sheets: this species is polygynous, so multiple queens can be kept together.

That sentence is not a lie. It is simply missing the half that matters. Polygyny in Lasius flavus is real, and it is conditional. Remove the condition, and you are not running a polygynous colony; you are running an arena.

Pleometrosis | founding together

Pleometrosis is when several newly mated queens found a colony together. They share a chamber, they lay together, and they raise that first batch of workers as a group. It is a founding strategy, not a permanent arrangement.


Polygyny | living together

Polygyny is when a mature, established colony contains more than one egg-laying queen long term.

Lasius flavus will readily do the first. Whether they go on to do the second depends almost entirely on where you put them. What the science actually says

We are not asking anyone to take our word for it. The published work is worth knowing.

The one proper experimental study on queen numbers in this species found that multi-queen groups had lower queen mortality and reared their first workers faster than lone queens. Co-founding genuinely works.

But the same study recorded that those groups began to split into smaller units at the time the earliest pupae appeared. The cooperation has an expiry date, and that date is the first brood reaching maturity.


What happens when the first workers arrive

The standard account across the literature is blunt: founding is pleometrotic, fighting erupts as the first workers emerge, and the colony ends up with one queen.

European hobby keepers use a more precise term than polygyny. They use oligogyny, meaning a limited number of queens tolerated, not an unlimited number. Those same keepers recommend three or four queens at founding as a sensible maximum, and they are equally firm that queens which founded separately will never merge later. Put two established groups together, and you have two rival colonies, not one bigger one.

Nobody anywhere recommends twenty.

Published studies are useful but small. We wanted numbers from a real batch, so this year we ran the largest Lasius flavus queen study we have ever done in-house, for educational purposes.


The setup

250 freshly mated Lasius flavus queens, collected after the same flight, housed together. They were fed properly throughout: protein jelly, cricket mash and organic ant honey, constantly available. Nothing was in short supply. No queen in that setup ever went hungry.

Worth saying plainly, because people ask: Lasius flavus adore our protein jelly. In nearly thirty years we have not found a UK native species that takes to it faster. If you keep flavus and you feed one thing well, feed them protein jelly.


The result

After exactly 30 days, 41 queens had been killed by other queens.

Not dead from stress. Not dead from mould or dehydration. Killed. And the pattern was consistent: the weaker queens went first, every single time.


What we saw that the numbers do not show

The part we did not expect to watch as often as we did was queens eating other queens’ freshly laid eggs. Eggs laid hours earlier, consumed by a rival queen with a full dish of protein jelly sitting a few centimetres away.

That is the detail that should end the argument. It is not hunger. Once the competition starts, brood is fuel. A queen who eats a rival’s eggs weakens that rival, strengthens herself, and buys herself the reserves to fight longer. It is strategy, not feeding.


Why the workers decide the outcome

Here is the part almost no care sheet explains, and it is the mechanism behind everything above.

When the first nanitics emerge, they are not neutral. They belong to whichever queen laid them. They carry her genes, they respond to her, and they work for her.

So the contest is never queen against queen for long. It becomes one queen plus her own daughters against a queen with nobody. The queen who laid first, and whose brood matured first, wins. Her workers help her kill the other queen. That is why it is usually settled shortly after the first workers appear, and why the outcome is rarely in doubt once you know whose eggs hatched.


The seven to eight month ceiling

People ask us for a number, so here is ours, based on our own stock rather than anyone else’s.

Seven to eight months after the first nanitics emerge is the absolute maximum we have ever seen two Lasius flavus queens remain together in a formicarium. Usually it is resolved far sooner, sometimes within a week of the first workers appearing.

We are not claiming that is a universal law of the species. We are saying that in nearly thirty years of keeping and breeding UK yellow meadow ants, we have never once seen it exceeded.


Why polygynous is true in a meadow and false in a nest

This is the distinction the internet keeps missing, and it resolves the whole contradiction.


The wild setup

Walk across established Lasius flavus grassland and you will see the mounds, big ones, spaced roughly every half metre, some of them decades old, sitting alongside each other quite happily. These ants spend around ninety per cent of their lives underground farming aphids on plant roots for honeydew. They have metres of soil, endless chambers, and total freedom to keep their distance.


The hobby setup that works

The credible accounts of long-term multi-queen Lasius flavus in captivity all come from large, natural, soil-filled enclosures. We are talking about the scale of an aquarium, roughly 60cm by 40cm by 45cm high, packed with substrate. In those setups the queens do not coexist so much as take a corner each, sometimes taking part of the worker force with them. That is avoidance, not harmony. It works because there is somewhere to go.


The nest on your desk

A formicarium is the opposite environment. It is compact, it is designed so you can see everything, and the chambers are pre-formed and finite. There is no far corner. There is no second territory. Two queens in a nest that size are in permanent contact, and permanent contact between founding queens has exactly one ending.

So the claim is true for the habitat and false for the nest. Same species, different physics.


UK Lasius flavus are not continental Lasius flavus

One more thing worth saying plainly, because it explains why some European keepers report longer multi-queen periods than we do.

Lasius flavus occupy an enormous range across Europe. They are native here, and the UK populations do not behave identically to those further south. We have worked with our native stock for close to thirty years and we know how they behave. A report from a keeper in central Europe, in a soil tank, with local queens, is not a prediction about what your UK queens will do in an acrylic nest in Surrey.

What to do if you already have multiple queens

If you have several queens sharing one setup right now, do this today rather than next week.

Separate them into individual queen ant test tubes. One queen per tube is safest. Two per tube is the absolute maximum we would ever sanction, and only if they founded together from the start.

Wrap each tube in tin foil so it is fully dark, add a tiny drop of protein jelly just inside the opening, and leave the tubes somewhere quiet, warm and away from daily household traffic. Then leave them alone. Constant checking is the second most common way beginners lose queens.

When a colony is ready to move into a nest, a test tube connection kit joins the tube straight to the farm with no handling of the queen at all.

How many queens should you actually start with

One good queen in a properly built nest will give you a colony that lasts decades. That is the honest answer, and it is also the cheapest one.
