5 Best Ant Farm Kits That Make Perfect Christmas Gifts in 2026

Are you searching for a Christmas gift that sparks genuine curiosity and keeps children engaged long after the wrapping paper disappears? We have kept ants since 1997 and tested more ant farms than we can count, and one thing never changes: a living ant colony makes an exceptional Christmas present for curious minds of every age.
Ant farms offer something most gifts simply cannot. Children watch one of nature's most organised societies at work, see the queen ant, the worker ants and the brood up close, and learn responsibility through a simple weekly care routine. A healthy colony with a queen can live for years. At home, a black garden ant queen can live up to around 10 years, and a harvester ant colony in a beginner's care typically lives three to five years, sometimes up to seven. With expert care it can be far longer: our oldest Messor barbarus queen turned 19 in October 2026. This Christmas ant farm gift becomes part of family life for years.
Every kit below comes complete with everything needed to start: a live queen ant colony, a nest, an outworld (the feeding area), food and full instructions, with live arrival guaranteed.
When to Order Your Ant Farm for Christmas 2026
Order whenever you are ready and leave a note at checkout with the date you would like us to send it. The one thing we ask: don't leave it to the last minute. Royal Mail handles a huge volume of parcels at Christmas, and delays at that time of year can be very long, so ordering at the very last moment is a real risk.
We recommend ordering so that your ant farm is posted at least 10 days before Christmas. Two weeks ahead is great, and three weeks ahead is even better. Order in good time and we will make sure everything you ordered arrives for Christmas, just as it has for our happy customers year after year.
The ants are fed before dispatch, so they arrive ready to wait for the big day:
Black garden ants (Lasius niger) can stay safely in their unopened parcel for around three weeks in winter.
Harvester ants (Messor barbarus) travel with more than a month's food, so they are comfortable inside the parcel for a full month.
Keep the parcel unopened somewhere at a steady room temperature until Christmas Day, away from radiators and windows.
We normally dispatch on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. For Christmas 2026 we dispatch every day from Monday 14 December to Wednesday 23 December, and the very last dispatch is for orders placed before 2pm on Wednesday 23 December. Please treat that as an emergency option only: with Christmas postal delays, an order sent that late may not arrive in time.
Christmas Morning: Building the Ant Farm Together
This is the moment families remember. The children open the parcel and, with parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, build the ant farm together. Once the nest is assembled and watered, it needs at least two days to absorb the water before the colony is connected, and then everyone gets to watch the ants move into their new home.
If the parcel arrives on the day you plan to open it, leave it unopened for about five hours at room temperature first so the ants adjust gently. Abrupt temperature changes harm the queen.

Do Ants Need to Hibernate Over Winter?
The most common question we get at Christmas is about hibernation, and the answer is simple: hibernation is not a must. Your ants will slow their development over the winter months whatever temperature you keep them at. Keep them at room temperature, no higher than 26°C, away from direct sunlight, your TV, heaters and vibrations.
We never hibernate our colonies or queens during their first winter. It is not necessary, and for a young queen it can do more harm than good. Around half of new black garden ant queens have no workers until the following spring, so they raise their first eggs alone, living on reserves from their wing muscles. In the wild, that is why around 95% of new queens never survive a long winter. We change those odds by feeding young queens every week and keeping them out of hibernation until they have workers to help carry the brood.
If you do give an established colony a winter rest later on:
Black garden ants and other UK natives: a cool, steady spot at around 10°C, never colder than 8°C.
Harvester ants: keep them at a normal winter room temperature of around 20 to 22°C, and never let them drop below 17°C.

Avoid Gel and Toy-Style Sand Ant Farms
Gel ant farms and toy-style sand ant farms are a common mistake. They look appealing in a toy shop, but they are not designed for a living colony, and ants moved into them often die, sometimes within the first week. Every kit in this guide is a proper ant farm, with a nest built for a queen and her colony to live in long term, designed from nearly 30 years of experience.

Tips for Beginners
Colonies usually fail for three reasons: no fresh water, not enough food and, most often, a stressed queen.
Water the nest only with mineral, distilled or purified water, never tap water or rainwater.
Feed twice a week with protein jelly and organic honey, in the outworld only, and remove leftovers after two days.
Change the water once a month, or sooner if it looks cloudy or discoloured.
Avoid direct sunlight. Just five minutes of direct sun can raise the nest temperature by up to 5°C, and abrupt temperature changes are deadly for ants.
Where to Put the Ant Farm
Away from windows, heaters and radiators
Away from vibrating surfaces, music equipment and TVs
Away from noisy machines and electrical appliances
Out of rooms with strong odours, such as the kitchen
If you struggle with assembly, here is our step-by-step video guide:
And if family circumstances ever change, we run an adoption and rehoming service for colonies whose owners can no longer look after them, so no colony ever needs to be released outdoors.

FAQs
When should I order an ant farm for Christmas?
Early enough for us to post it at least 10 days before Christmas. Two to three weeks ahead is even better, and you can leave a note at checkout giving your preferred dispatch date. Ordering at the last minute is risky because Royal Mail delays at Christmas can be very long.
Can the ants stay in the parcel until Christmas Day?
Yes. The ants are fed before dispatch. Black garden ants can stay in the unopened parcel for around three weeks in winter, and harvester ants for a full month. Keep the parcel at a steady room temperature.
How do I get a queen ant for my ant farm?
Buy an established colony from a specialist. Every Best Ants UK kit includes a live queen with workers and a live arrival guarantee. Please never try to catch a wild queen or dig up a garden colony.
Are your ants legal and ethically sourced?
Yes. Everything we sell is legal: captive-bred stock or UK-native species. We don't source or sell any ants from Africa, with no imports from the continent. Our founder, Pat Stanchev, explained this to Dialogue Earth in October 2026 for its report on Kenya's illegal ant trade: "The hobby done properly means captive-bred colonies and native species kept well; not stripping insects from the wild." Read the full article: Demand for pet ants fuels Kenya's illegal trade.
Do ants need to hibernate in their first winter?
No. We never hibernate colonies or queens in their first winter. Keep them at normal room temperature, no higher than 26°C, and feed young queens weekly.
What is the best ant species for beginners?
Lasius niger, the black garden ant, is the ideal first colony: UK native, gentle and forgiving. Messor barbarus, the harvester ant, is a fantastic choice for keepers who want more visible activity.
Which ant species is the most visually striking?
Many keepers consider the weaver ant (Oecophylla) one of the most impressive, known for its remarkable nest building and striking appearance.
How long does an ant farm last?
It depends on the queen and the care. Ant farms without a queen usually last only a few weeks. With a queen, a black garden ant colony kept at home can live up to around 10 years, and a harvester ant colony in a beginner's care typically lives three to five years, sometimes up to seven. The record black garden ant queen lived 28 years and 9 months in precise laboratory conditions.
Disclaimer: It is your responsibility to ensure you have undertaken enough research to be able to look after the insects and provide them with the correct conditions.
